Soren Soe, co-founder of CoilRig, talks about coiled tubing drilling vs. conventional drilling and the advantages of utilising this technology. He touches on the CTEnergy 500, the latest innovation developed by the CoilRig team, and how they are shaking up the industry in the USA.
Presenter:
Soren Soe, the co-founder of CoilRig™, joined UniSA, in 2018 and has held various Project, Engineering plus Executive leadership positions since completing his Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1991. He has worked extensively with leading development and commercialisation of onshore drilling rigs for mineral exploration, geothermal drilling, geotechnical applications and Coiled Tubing rigs for the Oil and Gas industry. During his career Soren has expatriated from Denmark to China, The Netherlands and Poland managing drilling equipment companies as Knebel Drilling A/S, Boart Longyear and A.P. Moller Maersk.
Soren joined the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC (DET CRC) in early 2013 as Project leader for the flagship Coiled Tubing Drilling Project. In this role he has led a diverse team of researchers and technicians from METS drilling service and supply companies, manufacturers, the IT sector and academia. The key outcomes of this work include the successful development and commercialisation of the revolutionary Coiled Tubing Drilling rig for mineral exploration the RoXplorer® Coiled Tubing Drilling Rig which was awarded the 2018 CRC Associations “Excellence in innovation award”. Soren Soe was one of the inventors of the RoXplorer® Coiled Tubing Drilling Rig developed for the Mining Industry and in MinEx CRC Soren lead the development of the RoXplorer® system for exploration plus a new RoXplorer® 1000 meter Coiled tubing drilling rig. His innovative efforts led to the successful acquisition of two international patents for Coiled Tubing Drilling systems.
In addition to working in the commercial drilling industry for 25 years Soren was directly involved when the RoXplorer® system was commercialised in 2022 to be manufactured and sold by Epiroc, a global provider of drilling and mining equipment. The system was operated by MinEx CRC for research drilling in Australia between 2020 and 2023 and commenced commercial operation in 2024 for private drilling contractors.
